Zusammenfassung
Unter kraniofazialer Chirurgie sind operative Eingriffe zu verstehen, die nicht auf das Viszerokranium beschränkt sind, sondern das Neurokranium einbeziehen. Da dabei der Hirnschädel geöffnet wird, werden diese Operationen in Zusammenarbeit mit Neurochirurgen durchgeführt. Die kraniofaziale Chirurgie stellt eine Weiterentwicklung bzw. Kombination bestehender Operationsverfahren dar. Sie wurde von Tessier (1967) initiiert und insbesondere von Marchac und Renier (1982) und später von Mühling (1986, 1987) zur Behandlung kraniofazialer Fehlbildungen im Kindesalter weiterentwickelt. Kraniofaziale Fehlbildungen werden hauptsächlich durch den vorzeitigen Verschluss von Schädelnähten verursacht. Virchow erkannte, dass durch eine prämature Synostose die Entwicklung des Knochens senkrecht zur befallenen Naht gehemmt wird, wobei gleichzeitig eine verstärkte Ausdehnung in Richtung der betroffenen Naht stattfindet (Virchow 1851/1852). Dadurch entstehen gesetzmäßige Schädeldeformierungen, deren Analyse umgekehrt auf die betroffene Naht zurückschließen lässt.
