Radial Head Fractures

Abstract

Radial head fractures can occur in isolation or as part of a more complex injury pattern with concomitant ligamentous or osseous disruption. Various treatment options exist and include non-operative, open reduction internal fixation, partial or complete radial head excision, and radial head replacement. A complete history and physical exam are essential including a careful assessment for concomitant injuries, and adequate imaging to characterize the fracture pattern and displacement are required for an appropriate selection of treatment. Currently, the literature does not support a clear treatment algorithm for the treatment of radial head fractures. Further research evaluating long-term follow-up will help guide optimal management of these injuries.
