Immer, wenn das Immunsystem auffällig wird, handelt es sich um überschießende oder insuffiziente Effektorfunktionen. Meist ist dabei die Regulation der Immunantwort gestört; Inflammation und Anti-Inflammation geraten aus der Balance. Pathogene Immunreaktionen basieren grundsätzlich auf Mechanismen, die ansonsten physiologische Immunfunktionen ausmachen.
