Zusammenfassung
Die Bioökonomie nutzt biologische Ressourcen wie Pflanzen, Tiere und Mikroorganismen, um Wert- und Wirkstoffe zu liefern. So wird diese Biomasse als Futter- und Nahrungsmittel verwendet sowie für die energetische Nutzung, dient aber auch als Lieferant für wichtige biobasierte Industrieprodukte wie Spezialchemikalien, biobasierte Kunststoffe, Tenside, Farben oder Pharmazeutika. Darüber hinaus können einzelne biologische Systeme wie tierische oder mikrobielle Zellen, aber auch Pflanzen so optimiert bzw. gentechnisch verändert werden, dass sie Proteine, Öle oder Metabolite für unterschiedliche industrielle Anwendungen produzieren.
In diesem Kapitel wird die Effizienz biologischer Produktionssysteme an drei Beispielen dargestellt: der Produktion eines Nahrungsmittelproteins in gentechnisch veränderten Bakterien, der Herstellung pflanzlicher Stammzellen für die kosmetische Industrie sowie Proteine und wertvolle Lipidfraktionen wie Carotinoide aus Mikroalgen. Diese drei Szenarien demonstrieren die generelle Leistungsfähigkeit biologischer Systeme. Die Vorgehensweise lässt sich auf eine Vielzahl anderer Produktklassen übertragen, wodurch der biologischen Produktion eine zentrale Rolle in der Bioökonomie zukommt.
