Zusammenfassung

Die gesundheitliche Bedeutung der Adipositas ist weniger durch die Adipositas per se als vielmehr durch Folgekrankheiten charakterisiert. Krankheiten können sich zum einen durch die große Körperfettmasse mit erhöhten statischen Belastungen und Verdrängung von Organen einstellen. Zum anderen sezerniert das vermehrte Fettgewebe eine Reihe von Produkten mit hormonellen, entzündlichen und anderen Eigenschaften, was zu metabolischen Komplikationen und Schädigungen an vielen Organen führen kann. Das Risiko für Folgekrankheiten hängt neben einer genetischen Prädisposition von Ausmaß und Dauer der Adipositas sowie von der Fettverteilung ab. Da sich bei nahezu allen adipösen Patienten im Laufe ihres Lebens Folgekrankheiten einstellen, sollten sie gemäß ihren Möglichkeiten informiert werden und die Adipositas als eine chronische Krankheit wahrnehmen. Die einzelnen Folgekrankheiten werden hinsichtlich Epidemiologie, Klinik, Pathophysiologie, Morbidität und Mortalität dargestellt.
