Kapitel 5 behandelt die Kommunikation zwischen Neuronen, speziell die Übertragung an der chemischen Synapse. Dieses Kapitel untersucht die grundlegenden Mechanismen der synaptischen Übertragung. Wie sehen verschiedene Arten von Synapsen aus? Wie werden Neurotransmitter synthetisiert und gespeichert, und wie werden sie als Reaktion auf ein Aktionspotenzial in der Axonterminale freigesetzt? Wie wirken Neurotransmitter auf die postsynaptische Membran? Wie integrieren einzelne Neuronen die ankommenden Informationen, die von Tausenden von Synapsen geliefert werden und das Neuron beeinflussen?
