Zusammenfassung
Altern ist ein Phänomen, das die Menscheitsgeschichte von Anbeginn an beschäftigt. Sind es zunächst nur wenige, historisch verbriefte Menschen, die tatsächlich ein hohes Alter erreicht haben, so wird in diesem Kapitel die diesbezügliche Entwicklung bis zur heutigen Zeit erörtert. Es erfolgt auch eine Beantwortung der Kernfragen: Wie alt wird der Mensch? – Welche Faktoren beeinflussen die Lebenserwartung? Der Alterungsprozess ist oftmals durch Defizite und Verluste gekennzeichnet. Dass dies nicht immer so sein muss, wird anhand spannender Biografien eindrucksvoll illustriert. Diese zeigen auch, welche Aktivitäten und Leistungen bis ins hohe Alter möglich sind. Hier geht es nicht nur um lebenspraktische und berufliche Leistungen, sondern auch um sportliche Höchstleistungen, die man bis dato für kaum möglich gehalten hat. Abgeschlossen wird das Kapitel mit den ökonomischen Benefits eines selbstbestimmten Alterungsprozesses.
