Zusammenfassung
Die endotracheale Intubation und die Tracheotomie gehören zu den Standardverfahren der Atemtherapie beim Intensivpatienten: Ohne künstlichen Atemweg – Tubus oder Trachealkanüle – ist eine differenzierte maschinelle Beatmung bei respiratorischer Insuffizienz nicht möglich, ebenso wenig die Zufuhr hoher O2-Konzentrationen unter Spontanatmung. Und nicht selten ist die physikalische Atemtherapie erst dann erfolgreich, wenn das mobilisierte Sekret bei Patienten mit ungenügender Hustenfunktion wiederholt über einen Tubus oder eine Trachealkanüle abgesaugt wird. Bei einer kleinen Gruppe von Patienten mit aufgehobenen oder abgeschwächten Atemwegsreflexen dienen Tubus oder Kanüle schließlich dem Schutz der Atemwege vor Aspiration oder Verlegung.
