Zusammenfassung
Schlaf besteht aus einer wiederholten, regelmäßigen Abfolge von Aktivierung und Deaktivierung neurophysiologischer Strukturen und autonomer Funktionen wie Blutdruck, Puls, Herzschlag, Atmung und Motilität. Das Ausmaß der Deaktivierung ist im Tiefschlaf am höchsten und im REM-Schlaf mit Ausnahme der Motorik am geringsten. Inwiefern sich auch die kognitive Aktivität während des Schlafs an diesen Verlauf hält, ist noch unklar. Experimentell bereits gut erforscht ist das Traumgeschehen, das sich qualitativ und quantitativ deutlich zwischen dem Non-REM- und dem REM-Schlaf unterscheidet.
