Der Wunsch, ja das Bedürfnis, Krankheiten zu lindern oder zu heilen, kann ohne Frage als eine der wichtigsten Triebfedern zur Entwicklung von Arzneimitteln im weitesten Sinne angesehen werden. Arzneimittel sind rückdatierbar bis auf 2100 v. Chr., und alle großen Kulturen trugen zur Weiterentwicklung der Medizin und Heilkunst bei.
