Injuries and Health Problems in Football

Abstract

The apophysitis is a frequent condition often engaging the young footballer’s health. This wide and heterogeneous family of pathologies, typical of a growing skeletal system, lead to a decrease of function of the affected body part due to the mechanical disruption of the apophysis. This often overlooked problem in literature can cause chronic symptoms and potentially limitate the young footballer development. A prompt and accurate diagnoses, followed by a stepwise rehabilitation programme, with reduction of activity and progressive functional recovery, are the milestones of the correct treatment of such conditions. In this chapter we present an overview on the classification and a possible treatment protocol for these conditions in order to provide the reader a well-structured programme to be followed in the clinical practice.
