Auf dem Weg zur Industrie 4.0 nahm die Logistik ähnliche Entwicklungsstufen wie die Produktion, welche sich ausgehend vom Neo-Taylorismus über die Lean Production nun im Rahmen der vierten industriellen Revolution dem Ideal der „Smart Factory“ annähert (vgl. Tabelle 1).
