Chest Wall Deformities

Abstract

This chapter focuses on the nonoperative management of pectus carinatum (PC), a broad classification of anterior chest wall deformities characterized by convex protrusion of the sternum and adjacent costal cartilages. The authors present an overview of key clinical correlates of the deformity and the evolution of nonoperative approaches to management. They also provide a detailed description of the protocol at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center for the most commonly seen type of PC, chondrogladiolar deformity, and relate the outcomes achieved nonoperatively over a 17-year period.
