In seinem Vortrag Similarity and congruence (ETH, Hs 91a:31) erwähnt Weyl einen von ihm „just 30 years ago” gemachten Vorschlag für eine einheitlichen Feldtheorie. Der Vortrag wurde also in der Zeit 1948/49 gehalten, während oder kurz nach der Überarbeitung der Philosophie der Mathematik und Naturwissenschaften für die englische Ausgabe bei Princeton University Press.
