Zusammenfassung

Laborexperimentelle Untersuchungen scheinen die Alltagserfahrung zu bestätigen: Frauen reagieren empfindlicher als Männer auf Schmerzreize. Insgesamt bestätigen Daten aus neueren Studien allerdings, dass eine Generalisierung der Ergebnisse nicht zulässig ist, und lassen vermuten, dass Schmerzen unterschiedlicher Ätiologie unterschiedlich ausgeprägte Geschlechtsunterschiede zeigen. In den meisten populationsbasierten epidemiologischen Studien ist die Prävalenz bei Frauen höher als die bei Männern. Zur Erklärung der beobachteten Unterschiede zwischen den Geschlechtern werden sowohl biologische als auch psychosoziale Bedingungen diskutiert. Möglicherweise sind dabei einige der schmerzbezogenen Geschlechterunterschiede als Sekundärphänomene geschlechtsspezifischer psychosozialer Unterschiede zwischen den Geschlechtern zu bewerten.
