Abstract

Classifications of meniscal lesions in children are interesting from several points of view: diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic. The presence or absence of an abnormality of the meniscus is the main parameter: some of the classifications are the same as for adults (traumatic lesions with normal aspect of the meniscus) and others are specific to children (meniscus with abnormality). The integrity of the anterior cruciate ligament should be also checked.

As there are actually evidences to increase understanding and surgical treatment of the meniscal lesions to prevent meniscectomy (and its osteoarthritis evolution in adulthood) and conserve the meniscal capital in children, classifications have to be known to choose the appropriate treatment but also to improve homogeneity of clinical studies that could be conducted in the future.
