Abstract

Starting from the most general and perhaps vague ideas about velocity, we arrive at definitions of instantaneous velocity, derivative of a function, and at the same time we solve the purely geometric problem of defining and finding the tangent to a curve.

We develop here the differential calculus, the arithmetic for handling functions, and we finish with examples of applications of the differential calculus in problems of natural sciences.

The concepts of differential equation and of primitive appear in this context.
