Abstract
This chapter summarizes the described issues, and provides directions for future developments in the field of coordinate metrology. The main problem, identified in early 2014, is concerned with the existing limits to the accuracy of coordinate systems. We don’t have in fact standards that allow the verification and assurance of the traceability with the meter unit for coordinate measuring systems of accuracies below 100 nm. Another important issue regards the correct accuracy assessment of measurements in production conditions, which may significantly contribute to the quality of the final products. A series of actions must be implemented, among them raising awareness towards metrology throughout factories by means of: training programs dedicated to methods of estimation of coordinate measurement uncertainty; implementation of the methods described in this book; promotion of skills needed to deal with budget errors and uncertainty budget; and implementation of simulation methods, initially in calibration laboratories and afterwards in industrial conditions. This chapter also highlights the key role of calibration laboratories in ensuring traceability, as well as the importance of undertaking research tasks on coordinate systems including those oriented towards the development of multisensor systems.
