Zusammenfassung
Lange Zeit galt die Wirtschaftsmacht USA als Schrittmacher der Weltwirtschaft. Hochkonjunktur und Rezession in Amerika traten mit einer gewissen Verzögerung auch in anderen Weltregionen in Erscheinung. Die US-amerikanische Wirtschaft befindet sich seit mehreren Jahrzehnten allerdings in einem tief greifenden Transformationsprozess, der die ehemals führende Funktion der USA in wirtschaftlichen Belangen, insbesondere im produzierenden Sektor, zunehmend relativiert. Mit der Industrialisierung seit dem späten 19. Jahrhundert hatte die US-Wirtschaft noch einen beispiellosen Boom erlebt, der die USA zur wirtschaftsstärksten Weltmacht werden ließ. Diese Erfolgsgeschichte war vor allem den Städten zu verdanken. Dies gilt in Teilen oder bestimmten Branchen auch heute noch; so erreicht das BSP einzelner Metropolregionen allein schon größere Werte als die gesamte Wirtschaftskraft so mancher souveräner Staaten, und einige US-Multis sind mächtiger als kleine oder mittelgroße Staaten.
