Zusammenfassung
Lange Zeit galten die US-amerikanischen Innenstädte als wenig attraktiv. Die „Downtown“ wurde entweder als unwirtlicher Bürostandort oder als gefährliches Ghetto angesehen, das durch baulichen Verfall und schleichende Abwanderung gekennzeichnet ist, kaum aber als ein Ort, an dem sich Geschichte, Kultur und Urbanität finden lassen würden. Ursache dafür war neben der im Vergleich zur „Alten Welt“ spät einsetzenden Urbanisierung (Kap. 17) der Prozess der Suburbanisierung (Kap. 18), also die Abwanderung eines Großteils der (zahlungskräftigen) Bevölkerung aus den Innenstädten in die kontinuierlich wachsenden Vororte. Dieser Trend ist seit Jahrzehnten zu beobachten und hält auch heute noch größtenteils an. Dennoch ist bereits seit den 1970er-Jahren, verstärkt aber in den letzten zwei Dekaden eine weitere Entwicklung festzustellen, die sich in einer regen Bautätigkeit in den Innenstädten, einer Aufwertung von (öffentlichen) Plätzen, dem Anstieg von Mieten sowie Bevölkerungsveränderungen in den innerstädtischen Bereichen ausdrückt und als eine „Renaissance der Innenstädte“ oder „Reurbanisierung“ beschrieben werden kann. Inwiefern es sich dabei um eine wirkliche Kehrtwende, einen nachhaltigen Trend, eine quantitativ nachweisbare oder auch erstrebenswerte Attraktivitätssteigerung der Innenstädte handelt, soll im folgenden Kapitel analysiert werden.
