Zusammenfassung
Hämoglobin kann Sauerstoff nur transportieren, wenn das Eisen in 2-wertiger (Ferro-)Form vorliegt. Sauerstoff ist ein hervorragendes Oxidationsmittel. Daher ist Hämoglobin gefährdet, weil 2-wertiges Eisen leicht in die 3-wertige (Ferri-)Form überführt werden kann. Es entsteht Methämoglobin (Hämiglobin). Die Erythrozyten enthalten deshalb ein Redoxpuffersystem, das Reduktionsäquivalente für die Methämoglobinreduktase liefert. Eine erhöhte Konzentration von Methämoglobin (Met-Hb) im Blut führt zur Methämoglobinämie: akut zur Gewebehypoxie und chronisch zur hämolytischen Anämie (Blausucht).
