Abstract
Nowadays, surgical gastrostomy has been replaced in most instances by less invasive procedures such as percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) or percutaneous endoscopic jejunostomy (PEJ). However, surgical gastrostomy still plays an important role in well-selected instances, such as when transillumination of the stomach cannot be seen on attempted endoscopic percutaneous gastrostomy, after prior gastrectomy, when percutaneous access to the stomach is otherwise not possible, or when there is ascites.
