Abstract
Besides the oxide materials currently in use as refractory linings, SiC- and AlN-ceramics show great promise as refractories in reducing atmospheres found in gasifiers. For this reason, AlN-Ceramics with different kinds of sintering additives, recrystallized silicon carbide (RSiC) ceramics as well as RSiC materials infiltrated with carbon and ZrO2 were prepared and their corrosion resistance was examined in different ashes. The experiments revealed a high stability of the modified RSiC materials. The results show that such optimized RSiC-materials have a high potential for refractory applications in different environments.
For the different AlN ceramics less corrosion resistance than for the SiC materials was observed. The corrosion processes take place mostly along the grain boundaries and in the secondary phases. Therefore, the corrosion resistance is similar to the corrosion resistance of alumina refractories.
