Abstract

Radiotherapy is an important part of state-of-the art multidisciplinary treatment for breast cancer, typically in the postoperative setting. Increased locoregional tumor control has been shown to improve long-term survival. Additional systemic therapy is essential to eradicate distant disease before overt metastases develop. Treatment planning has evolved from simulator-based 2-dimensional to 3-dimensional and now also 4-dimensional techniques, which account for breathing-related changes. Eventually, better sparing of organs at risk such as lungs and heart could be accomplished. International efforts towards harmonization of target volume delineation have been successful. These aspects as well as emerging developments including partial breast irradiation are discussed in this chapter.
