Abstract
The clavicle is the bony link between the upper limb and the axial skeleton. It is the first bone to ossify and the last to fuse. Its presence and shape varies between animal species, which gives an insight into its biomechanical role. Treatment of clavicle fractures has changed dramatically in recent years with a growing trend towards surgical intervention. This chapter focuses on the anatomy and function of the clavicle and aims to elucidate some of the developmental, traumatic, and non-traumatic conditions that affect this unique bone.
