Abstract
Clinical symptoms of inflammatory bowel disorders (IBDs) comprise diarrhea and abdominal pain, and inflammatory markers are often elevated in serum and stool. Ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD), the major types of chronic IBD, are characterized by episodes when symptoms flare up, followed by periods of improvement and clinical remission. The disease is lifelong and frequently manifests in the first decades of life. Detailed endoscopic visualization of the intestinal mucosa is required in these patients to diagnose or to exclude the disease. Thereby, complete investigation of the colon, the small bowel, and the upper gastrointestinal tract may be optimal to establish the exact diagnosis of IBD and to describe the distribution of the disease (Figs. 48.1 and 48.2). Colon capsule endoscopy (CCE) is convincing in combining endoscopy of the colon and of the small bowel. It could therefore become the ideal test to screen for intestinal inflammation (Figs. 48.3 and 48.4) and to monitor the effect of therapeutic measures in the small and the large bowel.
