Zusammenfassung

Religion und Spiritualität spielen bei der Mehrzahl der älteren Menschen eine Rolle. Mithilfe der Integrationstheorie, der Netzwerkhypothese und der Theorie der religiösen Bindung konnten die Zusammenhänge zwischen Religiosität und Suizidalität erhärtet werden. Gegenwärtig geht man v. a. der Frage nach, auf welche Art und Weise diese schützenden, teilweise aber auch risikofördernden Effekte zustande kommen. Suizidpräventiv wirken: moralische Ablehnung des Suizid, Verringerung von Risikofaktoren wie psychische Erkrankungen, Alkoholismus, Aggressivität und gesundheitsschädliches Verhalten, aber auch religiöse Bewältigungsstrategien, Rituale, die Auseinandersetzung mit existenziellen Fragen, spirituelles Wohlbefinden, Beratungsangebote und Trauerbegleitung. Als teilweise risikoverstärkend angesprochen werden dagegen spirituelle Verzweiflung, der Wunsch, bei Gott zu sein, um dem Leiden zu entkommen, religiöse Wahnvorstellungen, rein private Religiosität oder auch enttäuschte Religiosität. Ergänzend werden Konsequenzen für die Praxis diskutiert.
