Abstract

Endophthalmitis is a devastating ocular inflammatory process that can lead to blindness. In endophthalmitis, there is inflammation of the vitreous cavity along with the retinal and uveal components of the eye. Endophthalmitis may be a result of endogenous or exogenous sources. Endogenous endophthalmitis occurs secondary to a hematogenous dissemination and spread from a distant infective source in the body. Most cases of endophthalmitis are exogenous and occur after ocular surgery such as cataract surgery (acute-onset and chronic “delayed-onset” endophthalmitis) and glaucoma surgery (bleb-associated endophthalmitis), after open-globe injury (posttraumatic endophthalmitis), or recently occurring after intravitreal injections. Each form of infectious endophthalmitis differs in its microbial profile, clinical presentation, and course, as well as its clinical outcomes.
