Abstract
Cryosurgery is a technique where tissue gets destroyed by sub-zero temperatures. Besides the biopsy taken to confirm the diagnosis, no evidence of the histologic nature or evaluation of margin remains. Therefore, it is of outmost importance that the diagnosis of the malignancy about to be destroyed is confirmed and the treated area free of residual tumor. Noninvasive techniques like dermoscopy or confocal microscopy aid in reaching that goal. High-frequency ultrasound (22 MHz) will instead give information on shape and volume. Surface temperature measurement by infrared sensing technology will tell when the correct measurement is achieved at the periphery of the tumor. The combination of this knowledge with the image obtained by HFUS will allow to follow and record the cryosurgical procedure step by step.
