Zusammenfassung
Die Milz stellt das größte retikuloendotheliale Organ des Menschen dar. In der Vergangenheit wurde die Indikation zur Splenektomie selbst bei kleinen Milzverletzungen schnell gestellt. Durch Verständnis der auch im Erwachsenenalter wichtigen Milzfunktionen und der möglichen, teils schwerwiegenden Komplikationen nach erfolgter Splenektomie, insbesondere der Postsplenektomie-Sepsis (OPSI-Syndrom) wird heutzutage versucht, einen Organerhalt anzustreben.
