Abstract

When loads are applied to any solid body the stresses induced in the body vary, in general, from point to point, and there will be regions of high stress which will constitute the weak points of the body at which fracture will occur if the loads are sufficiently large. A knowledge of the stresses at these points and of the way in which they may be modified by alterations in the shape of the body is of great importance to the designer of engineering components.
