Abstract

Lake Constance has become eutrophic due to increased sewage and, particularly, phosphate input. Primary production has increased, the oxygen content of the hypolimnion decreased. The consequences for the whole ecosystem are discussed. Implementation of both technical (sewage-treatment plants with phosphate precipitation) and political (local planning for the whole draining area of the lake) measures is necessary to insure recovery of the lake ; these were initiated some years ago.
