Martin Strauß „Zweite Runde“ — Kunst im öffentlichen Raum, Etsdorf-Haitzendorf, 2001

Zusammenfassung

Zu einem temporären Kunstprojekt in Etsdorf-Haitzendorf, einer Gemeinde in der Nähe der Stadt Krems, wurden die Künstlerlnnen Mona Hahn, Ruth Kaaserer, Richard Künz, David Moises, Werner Reiterer und Almut Rink eingeladen. Ihre Arbeiten waren den Sommer über, verstreut über das Gemeindegebiet, zu sehen. Bereits im vorhergehenden Jahr war am selben Ort ein vergleichbares Projekt realisiert worden, bei dem die Probleme und Friktionen, mit denen eine öffentliche Kunst gerade im ländlichen Raum — mehr als in der Stadt — sich konfrontiert sieht, deutlich zu Tage getreten waren. Dass heutige Kunst vorwiegend im urbanen Umfeld ihren Platz hat, soll nicht heißen, sie hätte auf dem Lande nichts verloren — die extensiven künstlerischen Aktivitäten, die seit etwa zehn Jahren im Land Niederösterreich gefördert werden, und dies vor allem in kleinen und kleinsten Ortschaften, beweisen das Gegenteil. Dennoch gibt es jenen Gegensatz Stadt-Land für die Kunst und die Künstlerinnen. Ein hauptsächlicher Grund dafür betrifft deren Gegenüber, das Publikum, und ist schlicht ein numerischer. Zwar ist die zeitgenössische Kunst hier wie dort ein Minderheitenprogramm, aber in absoluten Zahlen gemessen ist die Gruppe der Interessierten etwa in Wien, Linz oder Graz eben doch eine stattliche Größe im Verhältnis zum Häuflein von Kunstliebhabern, das womöglich in einer kleinen Gemeinde sesshaft ist.

Abstract

The artists Mona Hahn, Ruth Kaaserer, Richard Künz, David Moises, Werner Reiterer and Almut Rink were invited to take part in a temporary art project in Etsdorf-Haitzendorf, a community located near the town of Krems. Their work was to be on view throughout the area one whole summer. Already the previous year a similar project had taken place in the same place. Here it became very clear that public art in the province is more fraught with problems and frictions than in the city. That art has its place today mainly in the urban setting should not mean that it is completely out of place in the country. The wide range of activities that have been promoted for about ten years in the province of Lower Austria, and in particular in the small towns and even smaller communities, show that the opposite is true. All the same, there remains the opposition of town vs. countryside for art and the artists. One of the main reasons is related to the ‘other’, namely the public, and this is a purely numerical one. While contemporary art is a minority issue here and there, seen in absolute figures the group of persons interested in it, in Vienna, Linz or Graz, is still a considerable size compared to the group of art aficionados that might be based in a small community.
