Tyrocidines and Gramicidin S (J1, J2)

Abstract

Tyrocidine is produced by Bacillus brevis (Hotchkiss,1944). Since its separation from tyrothricin, a mixture of about 60% tyrocidine and 20–25% gramicidin, by Hotchkiss and Dubos in 1940–1941, it has been considered one of the foremost examples of an antibiotic which causes direct damage to microorganisms and erythrocytes by a surfactant property.
