Enzymsysteme, welche die Übertragung einer Aminogruppe von einer Aminosäure auf eine Ketosäure katalysieren, werden als Transaminasen1 oder Aminopherasen2 bezeichnet. Sie finden sich im Tier- und Pflanzenreich und in Mikroorganismen. Die ersten Beobachtungen einer reversiblen Überführung einer Aminosäure in die entsprechende Ketosäure stammen von Neubaueb 3 und Rktoop 4. Keebs 5 beschrieb den oxydativen Abbau von l- und d-Aminosäuren durch Säugetiergewebe unter Ammoniakbildung und Auftreten der entsprechenden Ketosäure. Needham 6 beobachtete, daß zu einem Brei von Taubenbrustmuskel zugesetzte Glutaminsäure oder Asparaginsäure verschwindet, wobei weder Ammoniak, Harnstoff noch Harnsäure entstehen und der Aminostickstoffgehalt konstant bleibt. Baüstga 7 fand in einem Homogenat von Taubenbrustmuskel einen erhöhten Umsatz von Oxalacetat bei Zugabe von Glutaminsäure.
