Zusammenfassung

Allergien treten immer häufiger auf — das scheint mittlerweile festzustehen. Die lange Zeit vorherrschende Hypothese, dass die Häufigkeitszunahme alleine auf ein Ansteigen der Konzentration von Umweltkontaminanten zurückzuführen sei, lässt sich allerdings nach neuesten Erkenntnissen nicht mehr halten. Gerade die »Hygiene-Hypothese« hat hier zu einem Umdenken geführt, obwohl auch bei dieser Annahme zur Krankheitsentstehung noch gewisse Ungereimtheiten bestehen. Einen wesentlichen Beitrag zum Verständnis der Pathogenese leistet derzeit die Molekulargenetik, von der man sich auch wichtige Erkenntnisse zur möglichen Allergieprävention erhofft.
