Zusammenfassung
Die Tatsache, daß die von radioaktiven Substanzen ausgehenden Strahlungen — α-, β-, γ-Strahlen — sowie andere schnell bewegte Teilchen, die z. B. im Verlauf einer Kernreaktion ausgesendet werden, in einer photographischen Emulsion ähnlich wie Licht Schwärzungskörner erzeugen, kann zum Nachweis der strahlenden Atome herangezogen werden. Ebenso wie die Wilsonsche Nebelkammer gestattet die photographische Platte die Registrierung und die Unterscheidung der Bahnen individueller elektrisch geladener Teilchen. Die photographische Platte unterscheidet sich von anderen Meßgeräten, die in der Radioaktivität verwendet werden, wie Zählrohr, Ionisationskammer, Nebelkammer, durch ihre Eigenschaft, über lange Zeiträume verwendbar und gleichbleibend empfindlich zu sein. Aus dieser integrierenden Wirkung ergibt sich in gewissen Fällen eine Überlegenheit der „photographischen Methode“ über die erwähnten anderen Meßmethoden, so z. B. bei der Messung sehr schwacher Aktivitäten bzw. kleiner Mengen langlebiger radioaktiver Elemente, deren geringe Teilchenzahlen über dem Nulleffekt eines Zählrohres nicht mehr meßbar wären, bei genügend langer Expositionszeit jedoch photographisch noch nachweisbar sein können. Sie bietet überdies den Vorteil einer viel besseren Lokalisierungsmöglichkeit der strahlenden Atome, im Falle des Nachweises von radioaktiven Isotopen in Gesteinen oder histologischen Schnitten bis auf einige Mikron genau. Für Laboratorien, die nicht für regelmäßige radioaktive Messungen eingerichtet sind, empfiehlt sich die photographische Methode aus ökonomischen Gründen durch den geringen apparativen Aufwand, den sie erfordert.
