In Vitro Techniques for Antimalarial Development and Evaluation

  • Chapter
Antimalarial Drugs I

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 68))

Abstract

With the recent development of techniques for the continuous in vitro cultivation of Plasmodium falciparum we are on the threshold of a new era in malaria research. This new technology provides unprecedented opportunities for advancing the search for new antimalarial drugs and for elucidating the mechanisms of action of existing drugs. It is reasonable to anticipate that the application of these methods in laboratories throughout the world will lead to novel approaches to the chemotherapy and chemoprophylaxis of malaria.
