Zusammenfassung
Die jetzt allgemein benutzten und anerkannten Systeme des Pflanzenreichs sind unter der Annahme einer stattgehabten Entwicklung aufgebaut. Die Berechtigung dieser Grundlage wird neuerdings von Hayata bezweifelt, der sie durch eine Theorie ersetzt, die er zuerst in seinen Icones Plantarum Formosanarum (10, 97–234 [1921]) begründete und kürzlich auch in deutscher und französischer Sprache darstellte. Hayata geht dabei von Annahmen aus, die er aus einer ziemlich willkürlichen Erweiterung und Verallgemeinerung einiger Ergebnisse der Vererbungslehre gewinnt. Die Erscheinungsform der Arten entsteht durch das Zusammenwirken zahlreicher Gene (Kooperationstheorie). Die Zahl der existierenden Gene ist aber „von Anfang bis in alle Ewigkeit“ gleich. Und alle Sippen haben dabei zugleich auch Anteil an sämtlichen Genen. Alle Arten sind daher ihrem Wesen nach gleich. Die morphologischen Unterschiede der Arten kommen dadurch zustande, daß die gleichen Gene in ihnen verschieden wirksam (vollwirksam bis latent) sind oder daß sie an denselben Genen in verschiedenem Maße Anteil haben (Verteilungs- oder Anteiltheorie; diese und die Kooperationstheorie zusammen bilden Hayatas Partizipationstheorie). Ähnlichkeiten beruhen also nicht auf phylogenetischer Verwandtschaft, sondern auf ähnlichem Anteil an gleichen Genen.
