Abstract
Chrysanthellum americanum (CA) is the name generally used to designate Chrysanthellum indicum DC subsp. afroamericanum B.L. Turner (Turner 1982). CA is a wild Asteraceae of tropical Africa and America. It is not cultivated, although the interest it arouses is increasing because of its numerous therapeutic properties, the most important being hepatoprotection and regulation of the lipoproteic metabolism (Lièvre et al. 1984; Lièvre 1985; Larive 1987; Guillot et al. 1988; Requéna 1989). Components that were isolated among the active constituents (Becchi et al. 1979, 1980; Honoré-Thorez 1985) are two saponins (chrysantellins a and b) and five flavonoids: a flavone: luteolin 7-O-glucoside, two flavanones: eriodictyol 7-O-glucoside and isookanin 7-O-glucoside or flavonomarein, a chalcone: okanin 4′-O-glucoside or marein, and an aurone: maritimetin 6-O-glucoside or maritimein (Fig. 1). This flavonoid association constitutes an original feature of CA that can account for its pharmacological properties.
