Carcinomas and Sarcomas on Chronic Osteomyelitis

  • Chapter
Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors

Abstract

A squamous cell carcinoma, exceptionally a sarcoma, may develop from the outer rim or the walls of a draining sinus tract of a chronic osteomyelitis lasting many years; generally, more than 20 years. When a fistulized osteomyelitis has achieved these extreme degrees of chronicity, the risk of malignant transformation, together with the poor conditions of the skin, the deformity, and the joint stiffness, constitute one more reason for suggesting amputation without further delay.
