Abstract

“The technique or reasoning process of Emde and Schöpf, starts with the final product of metabolism, the structure of which must be known. At the other end of the road, serving as guide posts, stand the natural hexoses and their close relatives. One must work backward step by step toward this beginning, with only such guidance as is afforded by our comparatively meagre information concerning reactions under biological conditions. The intermediate products may never be any more apparent than are those in an ordinary alcoholic fermentation.” (Hall 1937: Comments on the process of reconstructive reasoning.)
