Zusammenfassung

Das Londoner Becken, ein geräumiges Tiefland, muß als eine eigene Landschaft aufgefaßt werden, obwohl sich diese gegen die benachbarten Höhen nicht einfach geologisch abgrenzen läßt. Denn deren Abdachungen gegen das Becken entsprechen den aufsteigenden Schenkeln zwischen Einbiegung und Aufwölbung. Zwar wird jenes von tertiären Schottern, Sauden, Tonen und Lehmen erfüllt und damit eine geographisch wirksame Verschiedenheit gegenüber den umrahmenden Kalken begründet, aber Tone und Sande steigen, mehr oder weniger geschlossen, verschieden weit hinauf. Noch am besten läßt sich die Grenze des Londoner Beckens dort ziehen, wo die Kreidekalke die Herrschaft erlangen, einerseits entlang den North Downs (vgl. S. 55), andererseits in ihrem Gegenflügel, den Chiltern Hills. Gleichwohl betrachten wir diese nicht erst bei Mittelengland, sondern in unmittelbarem Anschluß, da sie kulturgeographisch zum Bereich von London gehören. Auch sonst gibt es Schwierigkeiten. Gegen W verschmälert sich nämlich das Tiefland, indem North Downs und Chiltern Hills unter spitzem Winkel aufeinander zulaufen, und am Kennet bei Newbury klingt es schließlich in einem Tal innerhalb der Kreidekalke aus; daher wird dort die Grenze zweckmäßig zwischen Newbury und Beading angenommen.
