Zwischen der Morecambe Bay und dem Solway Firth der Irisehen See und den Pennines liegt Nordwestengland, auch eine Grenzmark wie Nordostengland und wie dieses vielumstritten, auch durchzogen von einer Hauptstraße nach dem N, aber noch weiter entfernt von London und der Themsemündung; zwar auch mit Mineralschätzen und Industriegebieten, aber kleineren als im NE und ohne einen großen Hafen; überdies in seiner Mitte erfüllt von einem massigen Hochland; an der W-Seite der Insel gelegen und daher feuchter und milder, mit etwas anderen natürlichen Bedingungen der Landschaft und ebenso anderem Verlauf seiner kulturgeographischen Entwicklung.
