Abstract
The performance of sliding contacts, for example the contact between a brush and commutator, is intimately connected with friction and wear; and the present chapter must not only deal with the electrical properties of sliding contacts but also with phenomena of friction and wear. Certainly, the text could be shortened if a sufficiently satisfactory and accepted theory of these phenomena existed and if it were described in textbooks. But this is not the case. A book by Bowden and Tabor [6] constitutes a primary attempt at a textbook on friction but it does not fulfill all requirements as a reference for the present book, in part because some important contributions to the theory of friction have been published since its appearance.
