Abstract
The fact that water is adsorbed on solid surfaces that are exposed to humid air has been known more than 100 years. The effect of the adsorbed water on friction and wear is significant, as will3 be discussed in ยงยง 40 and 44. It is, however, not known whether water adheres preferably at the outside of chemisorbed oxygen or directly on clean metallic surfaces.
