Summary
The Prediction of Rock Movement by Elastic Theory Compared with In-situ Measurements. This paper is designed to present the elastic theory of ground movements caused by longwall workings evolved by the author and his colleagues at Nottingham University, Mining Department. It is intended to emphasise the physical aspects rather than the mathematical analysis which has been adequately covered in previous articles. Local departures from elastic behaviour have been ignored but it is not intended to infer that such departures are either unimportant in the mine, or beyond mathematical treatment.
In a two-dimensional analysis, such as the one discussed, it is possible to calculate stress changes and the associated strains and displacements due to mineral extraction. The greater part of the work is concerned with isotropic ground which is probably applicable to some hard rock mining areas (e. g. the gold mines of South Africa). The isotropic case has been shown to be incompatible with the coal fields of Western Europe, but a form of anisotropy has been introduced which goes far towards meeting the conditions in our coal mines.
Comparison of analysis with in-situ measurements shows that under certain conditions it should be possible to predict the changes in stress, strain, and displacement in the ground caused by longwall working.
