Abstract
In 1931, Woodruff and Goodpasture reported that the virus of fowl-pox could be grown on the chorioallantois of the developing chick, and that proliferative lesions containing typical inclusion bodies were produced. A growing number of workers have since used the technique, and shown that a surprisingly large number of different viruses can multiply and produce lesions on the membrane. A majority of the papers which have appeared have dealt with the growth of vaccinia virus. The advantage of the egg membrane method in providing virus completely free from bacterial contamination is obvious, and the method may eventually displace the ordinary commercial methods of producing vaccine lymph. Our experience of the method, however, indicates that it has a much wider applicability for virus research than merely as a source of virus free from bacteria.
