Zusammenfassung
Numerous diseases affecting plants and animals are caused by minute infective agents now known as viruses, which are capable of passing through filters that retain effectively the smallest bacteria. Although more than forty years have elapsed since the earliest observations were recorded in 1892 by Ivanowski (103) and in 1898 by Loeffler and Frosch (136) on the causative agents of tobacco mosaic disease and of foot-and-mouth disease respectively, the true nature of these “filterable viruses” has yet to be revealed. The subject under survey here, “The sizes of viruses and methods for their determination”, will be recognised as one having an important bearing upon this fundamental question. The acquisition of knowledge concerning the state of dispersion of the infective agents suggests itself as a primary objective in their study and information regarding their particle sizes should prove of much value in orienting conceptions as to the physical nature of viruses.
