Summary

A survey is given of the present state of research concerning substance P. The chemical properties of this polypeptide are shortly mentioned and, moreover, its most important peripheral activities are dealt with. Furthermore, the experiments pointing to a central activity of SP are discussed. Special significance is ascribed to its central sedative activity and its influence on sensory transmission.

Pharmacological analysis in rats and mice in which, using different methods, a condition of excitation or hypermobility has been produced, demonstrates that, in such conditions, SP shows a tranquillizing effect.

It is stressed that, after purification of SP, testing of the activity of the newly-obtained fractions on isolated ileum only does not suffice. At the same time, a test should be performed concerning the central sedative activity of the fractions. As the best method for this, testing the aggression of isolated male rats is proposed.
